With the success of the EU FP6 Marie-Curie EST project RanPlan-HEC, nine research studentships are created at the Centre for Wireless Network Design (www.luton.ac.uk/research/irac/cwind ), University of Luton.

The RanPlan-HEC project is a major EC initiative to enable recent graduates who are in the early stages of establishing their careers to further extend their abilities and qualifications in the area of wireless communications network planning and optimisation. Generous Bursaries are available with additional benefits dependent on an individual's circumstances.
The project collaborates with Oxford University and industrial partner Aircom. Some of the research topics are:

Automatic 3G/4G radio network planning
Automatic 3G/4G transmission network planning
WLAN planning and optimisation
Novel dynamic simulation methods to study RRM algorithms
Radio propagation model tuning
The use of measurement data (e.g., drive test data and probe data) in network planning
Novel optimisation algorithms for wireless network planning and optimisation
The use of parallel computing in wireless network planning and optimisation
The missions of CWIND are:

To develop novel approaches that will solve telecommunications network planning and optimisation problems of real industrial interests;
To investigate and develop innovative methods that will bring fundamental changes to telecommunications network planning and optimisation;
To become one of the best-funded, one of the best-known and a leading group in wireless network planning and optimisation within three years.
To apply, you must have a good degree in telecommunications, mathematics, computing, electronic engineering, automatic control or other related subject and be able to write nice programs in one of the major programming languages, preferably in C/C++. In addition, you need to have a good understanding in one or more of the following areas:

Wireless communications
Operations research (optimisation algorithms)
Network planning tools development experience
Parallel and distributed computing
Radio propagation ; RRM algorithms
Candidates with industrial background and practical cellular network planning and optimisation experiences are strongly encouraged to apply.
To be eligible for funding:

You must not be a UK citizen or have lived in the UK for more than 12 months in the last 3 years immediately prior to your appointment.
You must have obtained a degree that entitles you to embark on doctoral studies and have less than 4 years research experience (however, research experience is regarded as strength).
You must not have obtained a doctoral qualification (i.e. PhD or equivalent)
