Academic features: Students able to switch between arts & social sciences and science & engineering subjects respectively before entering the second year. Awarding body: Dundee University. Length of courses: 4 years; others 5 years (architecture, dentistry, medicine, enhanced physics and engineering courses). Library & information services: Main library with approx 700,000 volumes; medical, law, nursing, art and departmental libraries; archives department; inter-library loan scheme. Accommodation: 65% of first years in university accommodation (all those that require it), 30% of all students. 2358 places available: 750 half-board places, £72 per week, term time only; 1540 self-catering places at £46-£60 pw, Sept-June or longer; plus 68 flats for students with families. Dundee has buoyant private sector housing at reasonable costs. 18% of first degree students live at home.
Term-time work: University does not encourage term time work but realises it is inevitable (20% believed to work); advisory limit of 20 hours per week. Some work available on campus in SU and residences.
Hardship funds: Total available in 1999/00: £510,000 government access funds, 500 students helped; £13,000 own funds, 50 students helped. Special help: students with children, self-financing students, and others in severe financial hardship; other funds available for those of Scots birth or extraction studying medicine, dentistry, science or engineering.
Tuition fees: Scottish and EU students pay no fees during course; other UK home students up to £1075 pa (£6300 for full cost LLB); overseas students £6300 (classroom-based courses, including architecture), £8300-£10,700 (lab/studio), £17,000 (clinical).
Student view: Campus is a mixture of modern and 19th-century buildings located in the city centre (but with no through traffic). All faculties on campus, except medical faculty 2 miles away and nursing college in Kirkcaldy. Ninewells Hospital is the largest teaching hospital in Europe and is renowned for research opportunities. Excellent relationship between university and students - community atmosphere, close liaison with city. Varied student population with high proportion of Northern Irish. Large library, open till midnight. The sports centre is excellent and on campus. The Union, which is the largest in Scotland, boasts a 700 capacity club and 3 bars which provide exceptionally cheap beer. Expansive games room with pool table and the latest video games. Quality debating union. Car parking spaces available for students. Courses vary, but are moving towards continual assessment with possible exemptions. Complete student support network including counsellors and welfare team. Free dental care on campus and facilities for disabled students. Over 100 active societies - many sports based. City geared towards students and is generally friendly and lots of fun.
Student life: Housing: Generally reasonable but 2 luxury halls of residence available. Drink: Union definitely cheapest (from £1 a pint); regular drinks promos. Eats: Union Eatery (The Filling Station), £2-£3 on campus. Nightlife: Excluding varied SU ents programme Dundee boasts the Rep theatre; numerous cinemas and new ice arena. Sports: Sports centre on campus features multi-gym and swimming pool. Public Leisure centre 10 mins from campus. Hardship funds: available through welfare system. Travel: Cheap fares available through Campus Travel in SU.
