What if I want to employ a student?
23. Students will normally have a stamp in their passports stating that they cannot work “without the consent of the Secretary of State for the Home Department”.
24. However, students studying at UK institutions, who are not nationals of an EEA country, can work subject to certain conditions. Neither you nor the student needs to obtain permission for this.
25. The conditions covering the hours and type of work the student may do are:
(a) they must not work for more than 20 hours per week during term time except where the placement is a necessary part of their studies and with the agreement of the education institution.
(

they must not engage in business, self-employment or the provision of a service as a professional sportsperson or entertainer.
© they must not pursue a career by filling a permanent, full-time vacancy.
