'The Chinaman' remark

That's bad. Who's the reporter? Maybe teach him/her a lesson on this?

They've changed that. Now the offending line became

The Chinese player will now face Stephen Lee, who beat Graham Dott 6-2.

Oddly enough though, the time stamp on the top middle was not changed. I guess BBC must have wished the lapse to go unnoticed.

Maybe, just maybe, as Country+man is not always an offending word (e.g. "Frenchman"?), the reporter applied the same rule to the Chinese player?

I have also witnessed a similar story created by the Economist
http://www.economist.com/world/asia/
The article "China and Central Asia" with subtitle "Go west, young man"
was "China and Central Asia" with subtitle "Go west, young Chinaman" last week.

Country+man in most cases is not offensive. The use of 'Chinaman' is offensive because of its strong association with that dark period for Chinese migrants in US history (see 生活空间). And since its offensive use is orginated from US, many European may be ignorant about its history. I believe the reporters in both cases are either not aware of it or believing now it's acceptable to use this word.

Of course it IS an offensive word!

I do not believe britons do not beware of it. Prigs!

Definitions of chinaman on the Web:

chink: offensive terms for a person of Chinese descent
a ball bowled by a left-handed bowler to a right-handed batsman that spins from off to leg
wordnet.princeton.edu/perl/webwn

AVOID. A slur, often applied to anyone of Asian heritage. A term from the 19th Century, specifically for the poorly paid Chinese workers who risked their lives building the American transcontinental railroad, as in "Chinaman¹s chance," meaning no chance at all.

On one hand, Brits look down upon everyone on earth deep down in their mind. That's in their blood. But the British empire has long since collapsed. Time for others to laugh back at them. thumbdown.gif

One the other, however, we Chinese still have a lot to improve ourselves. Respect don't come easy. One has to earn it through hard work.

Never underestimate an ordinary briton's level of ignorance. On general knowledge about the world, they do better than the Americans, but not very much. dry.gif

Anyhow this is not to be tolerated. We shall teach the offender a lesson whenever there is one. mad.gif

Chinaman sounds better than Chinky right?
