she needs a big car, but still easy access and easy parking, good handling car, fuel economy isn't as important.
Husband working, do long commuting daily. (70 miles a day maybe)
he needs a fuel economy, comfortable car for long motorway trips.
I observe this pattern on many of my colleagues.

Do you regularly take the entire familiy to supermarket at it's busiest time? I feel parking and get the kid out/in is a hassle. And big engine isn't economy for daily long commuting.

The whole point is to balance the cost of ownership (not just the cost of buying) convenient, and life style.
cost of ownership including maintenance cost, reliability, fuel economy, insurance value, resale value

I think for example a combination like this
big: vw Golf plus 1.6 Fsi petrol/ Audi A4 Avant/(if there are two kids already) VW Torun
small: vw polo 1.4 tdi 100 bhp diesel/ Skoda Fabia vRs 1.9 Tdi
