Hi Ben, I left my second job because of exactly same kind of nasty comments made on immigrants and China when I worked for Norfolk County Council. I got bullied by the line manger and the other two team members in our team. I was temping there at the time and they kept telling me that I did not have the same rights as permanent staff. But I decided to fight and I reported this to HR and consulted Citizens Advice Bureau, but the Citizen Advice said that I can fight but as I was a temp then they can ask me to leave whenever they want, and the complaint letter I sent to HR never heard any replies.
Today I quitted my current job because the similar reason. As I have learnt from the last experience of being a temp is in a rather vulnerable position and being bullied and discriminated so I got my current job as a permanent staff. I had never been trained how to do my job properly since I started therefore I mad mistakes from time to time. In this job I have to help to work with my manager's sister therefore any errors came up I got blamed and any progress I made my manager's sister got rewarded. Also my manager's sister and one of other team member talked to me like I was a piece of shit even though we got into the company at about the same time. I am really confused now that I have been employed as a permanent staff this time and why I still get bullied. A few days ago, my manager's sister imposed her way of doing my job onto me and I refused to accept she was telling me how to do my job while she does not have authories to do so, then she said my way is not as quick as she expected and she also said in front of everyone that she had timed my secretly regarding how long I did my job. She had no rights to time my work secretly since she was not in charge of me and that was very insulting. At the time, I wanted to cry and shout but I said noting as I felt numb and lost of my words. Next day I reported this incident to HR and Director. I had meeting with HR and Director and also got one colleague on my side to be my hearing aid. Since the meeting nothing has been changed apart from a letter that I received from HR said the issue I raised had been "dealt with". Yesterday morning my manager suddenly asked me to have a meeting with her and HR and brought up TWO TINY ERRORS that I had made and which I had rectified straightaway since she told me. She claimed that she questioned my capability because of those two TINY and PATHETIC errors. You know what, at the time, I though she needed to grow up a bit rather playing this sort of useless and childish game against me simply because I had made a complaint about how her sister treated me at work.
I handed in my resignation this morning with immediate effect and I am HOME AND FEEL RELIEVED. Yeah, I lost my job but so what I will find a NEW job with right people who treat me like a human. IF IN THE END I still can not find decent people to work with them f*** THEM ALL!!!!!!!!!!!!! I WILL GO TO WHEREVER HAS NICE PEOPLE AND FRIENDLY CULTURE AND ENJOY MY LIFE.

Bullying in the workplace
You shouldn't have to put up with bullying at work. Read about what bullying is and how to tell if you're being bullied, and details of what you can do to stop it.
What is bullying at work?
Bullying at work is when someone tries to intimidate another worker, often in front of colleagues. It's usually, though not always, done to someone in a less senior position.
It's similar to harassment, which is where someone's behaviour is offensive - for example, making sexual comments, or abusing someone's race, religion or sexual orientation.
It's not possible to make a legal claim directly about bullying, but complaints can be made under laws covering discrimination and harassment. If you're forced to resign due to bullying you can make a constructive dismissal claim.
Find out about discrimination Constructive dismissal - find out more Examples of bullying behaviour
Bullying includes abuse, physical or verbal violence, humiliation and undermining someones confidence. You are probably being bullied if, for example, you're:
constantly picked on
humiliated in front of colleagues
regularly unfairly treated
physically or verbally abused
blamed for problems caused by others
always given too much to do, so that you regularly fail in your work
regularly threatened with the sack
unfairly passed over for promotion or denied training opportunities
Bullying can be face-to-face, in writing, over the phone or by fax or email.
Before taking action
If you think you're being bullied, its best to talk it over with someone, because what seems like bullying might not be. For example, you might have more work to do because of a change in the way your organisation is run. If you find it difficult to cope, talk to your manager or supervisor, who might be as concerned as you are. Sometimes all it takes is a change in the way you work to give you time to adjust.
What to do if you're bullied at work
Employers have a 'duty of care' to their employees and this includes dealing with bullying at work. There are measures you can take if you're being bullied.
Get advice
Speak to someone about how you might deal with the problem informally. This might be:
an employee representative like a trade union official
someone in the firms human resources department
your manager or supervisor
Some employers have specially trained staff to help with bullying and harassment problems theyre sometimes called 'harassment advisers'. If the bullying is affecting your health, visit your GP.
Talk to the bully
The bullying may not be deliberate. If you can, talk to the person in question, who may not realise how their behaviour has been affecting you. Work out what to say beforehand. Describe whats been happening and why you object to it. Stay calm and be polite. If you don't want to talk to them yourself, ask someone else to do so for you.
Keep a written record or diary
Write down details of every incident and keep copies of any relevant documents.
Making a formal complaint
This is the next step if you cant solve the problem informally. To do this you must follow your employer's grievance procedure, or if one doesnt exist you can use the statutory grievance procedure.
More about grievance procedures Find out how to sort out a problem at work Read about the statutory grievance procedure (opens new window) Some awkward situationsThe bully is your manager, but the firm's grievance procedure says that's who you should speak to
Make the complaint in writing to your line manager, and ask that it’s passed on to another manager to look into. If that doesn’t happen or isn’t possible, make the complaint to your boss’s manager, or the human resources department.
The person bullying you is a sole trader or the firm's managing director or owner
Follow the grievance procedure. It may help you later if you have to take legal action against your employer.
Your boss is violent and abusive towards you and you're afraid to make a complaint
If you think that making a complaint will cause further bullying or harassment, you don’t need to follow normal grievance procedures. In cases like this, you can still then take legal action if you wish.
What about taking legal action?
Sometimes the problem continues even after you've followed your employer's grievance procedure. If nothing is done to put things right, you can think about legal action, which may mean going to an employment tribunal. Get professional advice before taking this step.
Remember that it's not possible to go to a tribunal directly over bullying, but complaints can be made under laws covering discrimination and harassment.
If you've left your job because of bullying, you might be able to claim unfair 'constructive' dismissal. This can be difficult to prove, so it's important to get advice from a specialist lawyer or other professional.

up up, just never give up and always fight back.
the place i used to work, my previous management had treated one of our temping staff very badly. she used to be a teacher, english girl, she handed in her notice after the rude treatment at work. also sent complaint letter to headoffice HR, someone had been sent to met her for investigation, in the end, she only has been told that they will forward the information to HR, also send a letter to the manager, but unfortunately, they cant change her personality, only can hope she will change after the letter. in my point of view, that is totally bullshit, why they dont organise an investigation, there were few stuff made complaint about her before, why they didnt ask her for a meeting to give her apprisal about her attitude to her staff? she is still happily doing what she was doing now, nothing changed.
i feel it is useless to make complaint within the company most time unless using outside support to take action.

I am sorry to see the story. Some times pressure is just too much for someone to deal with so look for a new place is not a bad choice.
Compliant is not useless, although sometimes you may not get what you hoped for. stand up and against it is the only way most times. You will learn so much to deal with different situation after all.
Employment law is complicated and itself is criticised; however, this is the way by which you protect yourself in the UK.

Just come back to update info regarding my new job. I got a new job and people there are ever so nice. I REALLY enjoy and appreciate this job and particularly the people I work with. Also my manager made me a cup of tea on my first day which really moved me. Nice people are out there guys. To me, in future salary is not in my priorities any more as I have learnt that regarless how much you get paid for if you are not happy then your life will be sheer torture.
