As one of your Chinese students, what you have said about China really makes me feel disappointed.
I know it is diffult for many of the western people to really understand our Chinese, but I thought it should not be the case for you as you are a very well educated, world well known professor who have been to China for many times and have had many Chinese student from different part of China.
"The world has waited for China to join it. Now China has to have the patience to wait for the world to understand China." That is said by the Chinese ambassador to London, and most of our Chinese have this hope. But now, after hearing what you have said, i feel the thickness of the wall for western people understand us is far from our imagination. Even maybe, there is actually no this possibility.
You said you could not understand me as a mother and wife staying away form home and studying in this country. The reason is quite simple: i want a better life for my and my daughter's future. If China is stronger and wealthier, his people like me don't need to leave their family and stay here as a foreigner being looked down by the local colleagues just because we are eating cheap food and we do not have enough money to go to the theatre. The Chinese boys in this office would not be called Free chinese labor.....We are humiliated like this, but we are still staying here....At this moment, I do hope my country could be strong enough to be the world leader! In that case, no one can humiliate us anymore....
But unfortunately, we are far from that. We are just getting enough food to eat, enough clothes to wear, enough place to live. And now, when we are just trying to get a better life, you call us a threat...
As you said about why should not Tibet, Taiwan, Hongkong be free from China? By your logic, why should not the other 30 provinces in China be independent? Why should not england, scotland, irland or even London be independent? There are 56 ethics in China, many of them are aggregated in special areas. According to your logic, we should have another 56 new counties in this world.
I don't know what else to say. As a chinese, i feel very very sad about what happened these days in this country, the biased report from the media, the accusation from western people. And today, the saddiest moment comes from my respectable professor.
