Freehold:指房子土地都归你,永久使用,适用于house

Leasehold不一定是999年。我看到过4000年的lease，也有只剩30多年的lease。还有lease费也悬殊很大，有几百镑一年的，也有5镑一年的。所以leasehold要看清楚，因为地皮是租的，出租条件很重要。

基本上的Flat都是Leasehold的，house也有leasehold的。 虽然大多数的house是freehold

顺便问一个问题，leasehold到期以后是不是继续跟地主谈lease还是房子就被收走了呢？Leasehold的房子是不是不允许加建呢？

Normally you will find 3 types of ownership in England (and probably other home countries), freehold, leasehold and share of freehold. Freehold, probably the simplest to understand, means that you own the property as well as the land underneath, normally with additional area for garden and other use. Leasehold is slightly complicated but you can think of all the properties on sale in China and they are all leasehold with a lease associated being as little as a few years to as long as a few hundred or thousand years. In that case, you own the property which can be considered as "float" above the actual land underneath. And you have to deal with freeholder who owns the land and management company who manages the whole block of properties. Share of freehold means every leaseholder gets a share of the freehold, which is very awkward but many people prefer it as you have great control of the whole block.

Lease can be extended and in recent years there are lots of law changes to protect leaseholder against freeholder. I cannot go into details but as leaseholder owning properties for a few years, you are given priority to extend lease if you want to. Generally speaking leasehold properties are still worth buying.

lease fee 不是council tax吗？租房子好像也没听说有lease fee。

Council tax is payable as long as you reside in a property here but you may claim discount for various reasons. Lease fee, as you pointed out, is not what it is normally called. Service charge plus grand rent is the charge in proper term. It is payable to the management agent and/or the freeholder.

The reason why you are not required to pay this fee is that normally landlords absorb it as a common practice.

True many people prefer freehold properties because you not only own a house but the land beneath it. It is fulfilling to think you have a piece of land lawfully registered under your name. The downside of owning a freehold property is that you have to pay all the maintanence cost for anything on the land you own, including house and garden and other stuff like fence. Sometimes it can be a nasty surprise.
