The first ever Firecracker Showcase will present an exciting selection of
some of the best new cinema by Chinese filmmakers. With movies from Mainland
China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, and the USA, Firecracker will show a range of
critically acclaimed stylish and intelligent titles that share a fresh
perspective, and give us a glimpse of what we can look forward to from
Chinese filmmakers in the future.
Firecracker Showcase is pleased to present a line-up that has six UK
premieres and includes festival successes from Cannes, Sundance, Berlin, and
Venice.
Firecracker highlights include:
MANHOLE (China 2002, d: Chen Daming) * UK Premiere *
A razor-sharp black comedy and a stunning directorial debut that was
announced to be a 揻ine standard-bearer for quality Chinese commercial
cinema?by Variety. An ex-convict fresh out of a Beijing jail and the
policeman he reports to build up an unlikely rapport.
BETTER LUCK TOMORROW (USA 2002, d: Justin Lin) * UK Premiere *
The Sundance smash and controversial US hit movie, which takes us into the LA
suburbs to explode stereotypes about Asian-Americans in a modern-day morality
tale about good kids turning very, very bad.
(Principal actor Jason Tobin will be present at the screening for a Q&A
session)
NIGHT CORRIDOR (HK 2003, d: Julian Lee) * UK Premiere *
The second film by Julian Lee, who has been described as a "gay oriental
David Lynch", NIGHT CORRIDOR stars Hong Kong heartthrob Dan Wu (recently
nominated for Best Actor at Taiwan's forthcoming Golden Horse Awards for his
performance) in a strange and nightmarish psychological journey where fantasy
blurs with reality and nothing is quite what it seems.
Other screenings include the HK box office sensation of 2002: high-tension
crime drama INFERNAL AFFAIRS, shades of SEVEN in powerful Taiwanese thriller
DOUBLE VISION, and other great titles.
