This will be the first exhibition to explore the connections between the French Impressionist painter, Edgar Degas and a number of Italian artists in Paris, who were inspired by his sense of design, incisive line and range of experimental techniques.

The exhibition will consist of some seventy works 每 oils, pastels, drawings, prints, and sculptures 每 of which roughly half will be by Degas, with ten each by his Italian colleagues, namely Giovanni Boldini (1842-1931), Federico Zandomeneghi (1841-1917), Giuseppe de Nittis (1846-1884) and Medardo Rosso (1858-1921).

Degas* Neapolitan family background naturally predisposed him to these Italian friendships, and although each of them worked in a distinctive manner, they all responded to Degas as a classical painter of modern life, to his compositional innovations, and to his technical virtuosity. The juxtaposition of Degas with these Italian artists will provide an opportunity to view the work of both in new and revealing contexts. In the exhibition galleries there will be groups of works based on different themes: portraits, the nude and modern life.
