Chinese student dies after crash

A student has died after a car accident on the Northumberland/Cumbria border.
Five students from Northumbria University were on their way to Newcastle Airport when the accident happened on Saturday morning.

It is believed the group were preparing to fly home to celebrate the Chinese New Year.

Two female students were taken to the Cumberland Infirmary, in Carlisle, after the accident on the A69 near Hexham, Northumberland.

On Monday, Northumbria Police said 21-year-old Ming Chen, of Bridge Lane, Carlisle, who was a back seat passenger in the car, had died.

Another woman who was badly injured is in a stable condition.

Police said the car had pulled out to overtake another vehicle but the driver lost control and the car crashed into a wall.

There were five people in the car who were all students at Northumbria University's Carlisle campus. Three were Chinese students, one was Malaysian and one was Taiwanese.
