Chinese champions Shanghai Shenhua say Howard Wilkinson has agreed to become their new manager.

Wilkinson has not yet penned a deal, but club vice-president Sui Jianhua said it has been arranged.

"We have not signed a contract yet, but it has been decided. He'll take on the position for two to three years," said Jianhua.

"The contract will be signed at the end of February before he comes to Shanghai."

Wilkinson was sacked as manager of Sunderland in March after a disappointing five-month spell and has been out of work since.

He has also had spells in charge of Notts County, Sheffield Wednesday, Leeds United and the England Under-21s, as well as being the FA's technical director.

Shenhua earned a berth in this year's Asian Football Confederation Champions League after winning the Chinese Divison A-league in 2003.
