See the news below - a detailed description of the execution of a dead man in walking. It is awfully appalling - especially when it comes to the request of the judge for the cooperation of the executed to end his life - does the judge look like a murderer, a polite one though?

Everybody hates murder. Death penalty also falls within a broad definition of murder, although being made institutionaly in the name of justice. It puts the whole society in the same moral level of criminals and it just stresses the impression of the society as being babarian.

I can't accept the idea of killing someone, in whatever ways, murder or death penalty - and I can't see much defference between the two in their brutality. A society should have a better way to penalise crimes if it expectes to be considered civilised.

Agree, don't think we are meant to be entitled to end anyone's life for whatever purpose, simply because we didn't create life, we are the beneficiaries of life. One may argue that women give births to infants. But that's a copying mechanism rather than an creation from scratch.

A reminder - a basic rule for professional duscussion is that no personal attack should be allowed - just as you promote death penalty does not necessarily mean your beloved ones have been murdered, and I don't assume this is your case.

And it's an erred understanding that death peanlty and humanitarianism are controdictory notions, which would inevitably lead to illogical conclusions. Humanitarianism is concerned with dignity of humankind upon a belif that it's a moral obligation of humankind to improve human welfare. The questions of dealth penalty raised in this sense are multi-fold - whether the dignity of the excuted, as a memer of humankind, is respected, albeit he definitaly deserves some kinds of punishment, and whether a society's treatment of the excuted reflects the self-respect of human being as a whole.

Certainly there is no easy conclusion to be drawn but it's also certainly wrong to consider it an outdated question no worth of discussion. It's of course not a new question - for example it had been considered thousands of years ago by Socrates. But the tense of debate has never been abated, particularly in the modern world in the US as well as in Europe. And the news in China is quite refreshing as death penalty there seems to have been taken for granted.
