David Beckham could be heading back to Britain to join moneybags club Chelsea for a massive £40m, it has been reported.
The shock claim would see the superstar leaving Real Madrid after just one season - which has been notable more for his performances off pitch than on.
According to the London Evening Standard, reliable sources close to the player say it is a "certainty" he will move to the Stamford Bridge club on an estimated £100,000 a week.
The England captain has recently been hit by a string of allegations that he has been cheating on his wife, former Posh Spice Victoria.
He is reported to have met Chelsea's Russian billionaire owner Roman Abramovich in Madrid even before the tabloid accusations about his private life surfaced.
And Chelsea have made no secret of their desire to sign Beckham.
The move would end the player’s enforced separation from wife Victoria, who has refused to make a permanent move to Madrid.
Earlier, Victoria had hinted that the player would be returning to the Premiership.
And his new personal manager, Terry Byrne, was formerly on the backroom staff at Chelsea, and still has close links with the club.
Beckham’s year in Spain began with a glittering ceremony at the famous Bernabeu stadium, but more recently his private life has been dogged by claims that he slept with his former PA, Rebecca Loos.
She has since been on TV to talk about their relationship - and even stole the limelight at the premiere for Kill Bill: Vol. 2.
So far, Beckham has officially denied all reports he is leaving the Spanish club.
