Why did I not know this before?
But since flywhc's happy ending, there are not so many new posts on here.
I spent two days on this website, searched some helpful information for my job hunting. And this one is the best one.
I had exactly the same difficulties as flywhc had before in the job hunting, and gave up. Now at least I can see some hope.
About myself, after graduating, I worked for 4 years at a HK company in China. First I did some IT support, network management and some software development.
Got my MSc in 2002 and luckily enough to have a year internship at a top IT company. But didn＊t get the job, the reason was
1) My English (Spoken English) was not good enough I think.
2) The job (Testing, my MSc is web development Java based) was not exactly what I wanted. So I didn＊t put enough push to my line manager for the job, also the last month before I left he was on holiday because his wife gave birth to their second child.
Then I spent two months searching Java development job, mainly from jobserve.co.uk (I was been told it was a very good site, indeed I found quite a lot vacancies that I was looking for, but all via agencies). Sometimes I got quickly response from the agencies, maybe because of my MSc and internship background. They asked questions like have you got any interview recently? What companies? What salary you were looking for etc. I told them I had some recently but still waiting for the final result, the reason I said that was to make them think I was quite popular for the Java role. And the salary I required was about 20k, then down to 18k.17K. But then nothing heard from them after that. I felt being cheated because I thought they just wanted to get some information about the companies, which I was been invited for an interview rather than to help me to find a job. I still got some telephone calls although I stopped sending CV via the website for a while. There was a time, I felt very angry and told them I wouldn＊t tell you about the company＊s name unless you told me about the company that you wanted to help me find a job there. They must thought I was so strange.
Near the end of 2003, I had to worry about my Visa, spent time to apply courses in order to extend my Visa. Applying HSMP was not enough time at that time. But after an interview easily got the MBA offer starting from Feb. Got one and half year extension. For sure I won＊t really to take the course.
Then I changed my job-hunting direction. I only applied jobs directory to the companies via jobs.ac.uk and some newspapers and my university＊s website. Not jobserve any more. It approved my decision was right; I got quite a few interviews lately. But I still haven＊t got a job. Only one interview I needed to take a test. The others all were one to one, one to many. At the same time I also prepared my documents for applying HSPM, so stressful, each time I got rejected after the interview I didn＊t do anything for a week. So I missed the good chance for applied the HSMP, because the application applied before Feb 2004, normally only took a week to get the decision and the Visa done. My application was handed in on April and got the result until Sep and the Visa just before last Xams. The time waiting was painful.
About the interview, some I felt good, but some not, and the work permit was always an issue and my English as well I think. I totally gave up, just waiting for the HSMP result and concentrated on my full time job as a waiter, at least I could earn some money if my HSMP application got rejected either.
I did try to search jobs after receiving my HSPM approved letter and did have an interview. But I didn＊t have the confident as from the beginning. The last one was a Testing post. I thought I could not get a Java job but might be could do one in testing. Now I don＊t mind whatever job if I could have one. As I have to face the fact that I need to extend my HSPM visa at the end of the year. The interview people afraid that I might be move to the development team if they took me on, the question they asked all related to this topic because the vacancy was the guy moved to the development team from the testing team.
I didn＊t try harder to search a job until my Visa done. In the mean time, fair enough I didn＊t have any interviews either. But anyway, it＊s Xmas time what could I do. After Xmas I tried to look for jobs like IT support and Help desk. Because I haven＊t done any programming and Testing for a year now, maybe that＊s the only choose. Of course the salary drops to about 15 to 17. But I still keep being rejected. Make me fell I am over qualify. So what can I do now? I am thinking to open my own business, but it＊s not that simple. I don＊t know what to do now. But I have quit my waiter job already, because in the last year I got nothing but some money, I didn＊t know anyone, no mention some IT friends.
I am grad to come here; at least I knew some people like flywhc had the same feeling during their job hunting. I am not the only one, although I didn’t have the same strong background as flywhc to get a 30k job. I will thanks god if I can get a job above 18k. This forum engorges me a lot. Especially Verona’s advises.

关于期望工资，如果你期望低于20k就是跟成千上万的毕业生竞争，雇主也看不起。我的经验是要价高至少能得到中介的尊重。
关于工作内容，没有一技之长难以竞争过本地人更无法跟期望的高工资相配。我后来找到工作的很大原因在于自学了新技术并且作了作品给考官看。
假如你会java， 本身干不了什么，你要是学会j2me, 再加上3d graphics的基础，写一个打球的小游戏或者3d engine去gameloft面试吧，他们正在招人。
关于写CV，verona已经写得很透彻了，还给了例子。我不知道你的英语如何，不过上面帖子里写得那么长，语法和拼写错误也都不少。CV要写得简练一定不能出错，多查查吧。
关于口语，我从来没有中断过打工，每周至少6小时，保持语感。当然工作不是很累，多数时间都在聊天。很感谢当时我的老板。

你所说的电话骚扰是什么意思阿？是骚扰agency的还是人事部的？你怎么会有面试官的电话呢？

i think that undergraduates spending 3 yr here even have more advantages than those only spending 1 yr for a master here.

可是毕竟学历不行啊。而且又没有什么工作经验。除了placement yr加上几分零工，就没什么可以说的了。
还是V大快些签授 job hunting bible.
像我这样under，正在写final project 还要准备考试。再加上工作不顺利，自信心严重被摧残中。

Anyway， 我还是很庆幸看到了这张帖子。 flywhc 的经历真的给我了很大的触动。

找个同行有经验的看看CV还是很有用的。
Career service那些人只懂书本上那些CV技巧，要是他们什么都懂的话也不会去做career service了
