Dear Members,
Seeing there are lots of people looking for housing this year, I thought I'd give everyone some ideas on where to look.

Cambridge Accommodations Notice Boards http://www.brettward.co.uk/canb/
Selection of large Cambridge property management firms http://www.cambridge-lettings.co.uk/
If you need a nice WWW map to find the addresses, use: http://www.streetmap.co.uk/ or http://www.multimap.com but the best is to get a real map from a store!
I suggest all of you to start by visiting the Accommodation Service first to get a feel for prices (usually between 220-350 pounds / month not including bills), locations (anything in City Centre or Mill Road area is good, avoid villages like Coton or Trumpington or Milton), and quality of furnishings (furniture, newness), provision of white goods (washing machine, dryer, dishwasher, oven, etc.). Then try the other methods, which usually are a bit more expensive, but might give you something more suitable.
A couple of notes:
1) Don't hesitate to pick up the phone and call the landlords and property offices ASAP! Most of the properties you see will be already GONE. This year, the Colleges have systematically over-admitted, resulting in a terribly overcrowded property market. Good properties are coming and going in a matter of days.
2) Be flexible with your time. Arrange to see the properties at the earliest possible time. But ALWAYS SEE THEM before committing.
3) Be flexible with your rooming arrangements. Find people you know to room with. There are a lot more decently priced houses for 3-4 people than single rooms. And don't be afraid to turn a living room into a 4th or 5th bedrooms. That can save a LOT OF MONEY!
4) Be sure to emphasize that you are a POST-GRADUATE (M.Phil. or PhD) or POST-DOC or RESEARCHER! Undergraduate students have a terrible reputation in Cambridge. Many houses actually ask for 'professionals only', which means post-docs and visiting scholars only...
5) Get married... oh well... that saves lots of money too... since you can go for the nice single bedroom studios...
6) And finally. In previous years, a good strategy was to sign a short-term lease and hope that the colleges open up their housing in November or December. This is not going to be wise this year. Nearly all the colleges have overadmitted and already have a waiting list. However, it may be possible that the property market will be less crowded in October (once all the new students found their houses) and so it will be easier to find a place.
Sample Search:
For a start, you might check out the properties on this page. http://www.eurolet.co.uk/cgi-bin/listgen?location=1
or this one: http://www.vebra.com/home/vebra/searchmap.asp?firmid=0&branchid=1&dbtype=2
and find the ones you like. Then post a email to the society asking for people to share with you. Don't be afraid extend an invitation to other societies like CSSA or to the University Accommodation Newsgroup.
That's all! Expect to spend a good 3-4 days searching.
Happy hunting!
