The University of Cambridge
is pleased to announce a new collaboration between the Sun Hung Kai Properties-Kwoks'
Foundation and the Cambridge Overseas Trust to contribute to the development of
the People's Republic of China
and its integration into a global political economy. The announcement comes on
the occasion of a visit to Cambridge
on 9-10 October 2005 by Mr Raymond Kwok and Mr Richard Kan of Sun Hung Kai
Properties-Kwoks' Foundation.
To achieve its objectives, the collaboration gives
scholarships to able students from the People's Republic of China
to pursue graduate studies in Cambridge
and provides opportunities, in Cambridge,
for leading citizens of the People's Republic in government, public life, the
professions and business and industry to advance their understanding of issues
of common concern.
Mr Raymond Kwok, a distinguished alumnus of Jesus
College, has returned to Cambridge
with Mr Richard Kan on the first anniversary of the signing of the Foundation's
agreement with the Cambridge Overseas Trust. As trustees, they will be attending the inaugural meeting of the
newly-formed Cambridge China Development Trust, of which the Foundation is one
of the supporters, the launch of its first programme, and will be meeting with
the Kwok Scholars whom the Foundation helps to support.
Mr Walter Kwok, Chairman of the Foundation, has sent a
message of congratulation, expressing his satisfaction with the progress of the
collaboration which “strengthens ties between China
and Europe … hand-in-hand with the University
of Cambridge”. The Vice-Chancellor of the University
of Cambridge Professor Alison Richard
commented: “We are most grateful to the Sun Hung Kai Properties-Kwoks'
Foundation for its generous support of this important international initiative.
We are confident that this funding will enable the Cambridge Overseas Trust,
and the newly-established Cambridge China Development Trust, to take
initiatives of great importance, which will strengthen the already powerful
links between the People's Republic of China
and the University of Cambridge.”
The collaboration with the Sun Hung Kai Properties-Kwoks'
Foundation will run for a period of five years in the first instance, with the
Foundation contributing almost £400,000 a year.
