Professor Croll has researched and taught in universities in the US, the Netherlands and China as well as Britain. Her research interests include anthropology of development, children and development, and social development including gender issues. She has published more than a dozen books and numbers of academic papers on social development issues in China, has undertaken consultancy work for the World Bank, ILO, UNRISD, UNICEF, UNDP, FAO, IFAD and the Ford Foundation, and was past Chair of the United Nations University Council. She is at present the Vice-Principal of SOAS and a member of the Prime Minister's China task force.
